I've been working on values, values, values...

I switched from portrait to a landscape today to experiment a little bit with holding the values. 

I painted a small 8x8 grisaille of the Boston Public Garden in Raw Sienna to establish the value pattern and values. 

I then overpainted it with color and tried to hold the same value assignment. 

Two surprises:

The trees are actually quite dark in value, even in the light. 

The sky needs to be pushed darker in value at the top to create the illusion of distance.
