The superstorm Sandy allowed me to spend a few hours at the easel, which I thoroughly enjoyed.  (We were so fortunate and did not sustain any damage from this storm!)  I painted this still life to take my mind off the impending storm.  

My concept for this painting was to capture the gorgeous glazes in the pottery (recently borrowed from a friend!)

I haven't painted recently, so I wanted to keep it fairly simple. 

I used a fairly limited palette:

I started with a very rough value study to establish sizes and placement of objects. 

Next I painted the pottery jar, the gem of the painting.  It's glorious with gold, reds, purples, and blues.

Then I moved onto the small jar and flowers. 

Next,  I added the drape in front.   ( I didn't photo the drape in back and table top.)

I fiddled with it a little more today, but I'll put it away for a bit and take a fresh look in a week or so.  

I'm happy with this painting, considering it's been so long since I have painted!  (It'll probably be my submission into the SAA House Tour.)
